Michael Scott Cuthbert

Chief Musical Officer @ Artusi, Inc. and Associate Professor of Music MIT

Professor Michael Scott Cuthbert is a musicologist, music theorist, computer musician, digital humanist, and lapsed clarinetist and composer. Myke teaches music theory and history at MIT as an Associate Professor and Faculty Director of Digital Humanities. He’s the creator of the music21 toolkit for computational musicology and its javascript sidekick music21j. Myke loves teaching theory but was bothered by the fact that so much of what he was teaching was disconnected from the process of hearing and making music. So he started making digital tools for music theory as a separate side project, which blossomed into Artusi, Inc., a set of online interactive workbooks for music theory and aural skills. Now used in classrooms around the globe, Artusi has revolutionized teaching by providing students with unlimited interactive training while providing instructors with automatic grading. Myke’s goal is to let the system take care of the mechanical training and free up valuable classroom time for instructors to cultivate creativity.
